Does Suteki try to copy nature?
No what our goal is to convey the feeling of what the client wants to convey using natural elements or modern man made elements. For example: A client has fond memories of a creek they used to play at as a child and wonders if we can make something that reminds them of that time and space.
So the most important thing is to find out what they liked about that experience and how it made them feel. What did they enjoy doing there?
My job is to find that feeling and capture it. Once we know what it is we can set to work. What we create is to reinforce that feeling that they want to convey in that space. So no we don’t need to copy nature or the exact place but rather build a bridge to that memory using elements of nature to do so in this example.
What is the design process like?
The design process can begin once all the information has been gathered. Let’s use the example above about the creek. Our client has fond memories of sitting in the grass near the creek reading books,playing and gazing across the creek to the trees on the other side. The space they have to work with is on one side of the fenced back yard.
Knowing what the budget is and what the client wants. I will do some drawings that present different options. Once a plan has been settled on I can mark out the area to let the client get an idea of what and where everything will be. So in our example I would mark out where the trees would go, where the gravel creek bed would be and the irrigation. It is important to me at this point to make everything flow naturally and balance out and make any revisions as necessary.
Typically there is a sense of excitement about the project after the design process and this let’s me know that I have done my job and listened to the client which is just what I am looking for. Now it’s time to create the space.
